In this tutorial, we will discuss about the image editing feature of WordPress. In this chapter, you will learn how to properly edit, rotate, crop, flip, and scale images using the built-in image editing feature of WordPress.
An Introduction to WordPress Image Editing:
Do you know that WordPress has a built-in image editing feature, using which you can do the basic image editing tasks? Yes... You can do simple editing tasks such as cropping, rotating, flipping, and resizing images.
This is extremely useful when you use WordPress for micro-blogging or when writing a quick post on the go (from a public computer or mobile). Instead of using or searching for third-party software for resizing or cropping your images, you can use this WordPress feature to get the job done.
In this article, we will show you the tricks to use WordPress as a basic image editor to crop, rotate, resize, and flip uploaded images.
If you want to adjust default thumbnail sizes for images then see on configuring WordPress Media Settings.
How to Use the WordPress Image Editing Feature:
First thing you need to do is upload your image. You can upload an image to WordPress by going to the Media ⇒ Add New tab.
Then once your image is uploaded, you need to click on the edit link at the right side of that upload. That will take you to a page where you can put some descriptions about that image such as image title, image alt description etc..
Alternatively, you can go to the Media Library and select the image you want to edit.
Just below the image, there will be an “Edit Image” button. Pressing that button will take you to the built-in image editor of WordPress.
WordPress Image Editing Features:
Cropping Images:
You must first select an area on the image by dragging the mouse over it while holding down the left mouse button. If you want to select the area by maintaining a pre-defined aspect ratio or exact selection size, then you can define that in the “image crop” widget area on the right side. In that case, you have to also hold “shift key” while selecting the image area.
After that, just click on the crop button to crop the image according to the selection.
Rotate Images:
No need to select any area of the image. Just click on the rotate buttons can rotate the image orientation. There are two buttons for rotating images; one for counter clock-wise and second is for clockwise rotation.
Flip Images:
Same as rotation, there are two buttons for flipping an image. One is for the vertical flip and second is for the horizontal flip.
Undo and Redo Button:
The next buttons are for Undo/Redo changes that you have made to the uploaded image.
Scale / Resize Images:
On the right side panel, there is an option to scale or resize images according to your needs. You can specify the expected height and width of the image in pixels and WordPress will resize that image for you.
